Be Conscious, Be Human

Eco-friendly, Global-warming, carbon footprint, organic food, and going green are voguish jargon these days. But behind the buzz, there is a real need for each of us to do something constructive, an action that will save and revitalize our planet that is groaning under the strain of too many people using too few resources.

If we start applying a few modest suggestions, we can contribute a lot to saving our Mother Nature.

Save Electricity

Kindly switch off the lights, computers, Televisions, UPS, Fans, Air Conditioners, and other electric appliances if you are not using them. Use CFL bulbs (Compact fluorescent light bulbs use a fraction of the electricity as incandescent light bulbs to produce the same amount of illumination.) Despite its great importance in our daily lives, few of us probably stop to think about what life would be like without electricity.

Water Conservation

Please don’t waste water. Water is our life. Thousands of people die every year due to droughts and it’s after-effects (for e.g. infertile land, lesser employment opportunities, a steep increase in prices of essential commodities)

Save trees

According to an estimate, it would take a rough average of 24 trees to produce a ton of printing and writing paper. It takes about ten years to grow almost any tree to full size. Still, we ignore the importance of trees. As my official signature says “We have a responsibility to the environment.
Before printing this e-mail or any other document, let’s ask ourselves whether we need a hard copy.” I know even I lack in implementing it fully. But I would request all of you to kindly save the paper as much as possible. Try to take a printout on both sides and while using notepads and diaries write on each and every page like you use to write at the time of submitting your school and university assignments.

Don’t Waste Food

Do you know that the amount you spend on eating out for lunch in one day could support monthly medical care for an orphan? When several people die every year because of hunger and malnutrition, we are wasting tonnes.
1.02 billion people do not have enough to eat – more than the populations of the USA, Canada, and the European Union; (Source: FAO news release, 19 June 2009). 65 percent of the worlds hungry live in only seven countries: India, China, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Ethiopia.
